Readers Write: League fosters bipartisanship

The Island Now

I am the president of the Port Washington-Manhasset League of Women Voters.

The purpose of the LWV is to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government.  The LWV is strictly nonpartisan, though we do take policy positions.

This year, the LWV will continue to lobby for legislation that guarantees all women equal status and economic rights.

We continue to monitor local zoning patterns and solid waste management programs, as well as efforts to upgrade and protect our natural resources.

We support the merger of state courts and the merit selection of judges.

We oppose the death penalty.  On the national and state level, the LWV supports campaign finance reform, implementation of the Help America Vote Act, and effective ethics legislation; on the state level, we support improved measures to provide representation for legislative districts in case of vacancy and for an independent board to implement redistricting.

The LWV policy of nonpartisanship is a source of strength to the LWV and is the basis of our voter service efforts (Voters Guide, Vote411.org, They Represent You, Candidate Forums & Moderators, Voter Registration & Voting Information and Speakers Bureau).

For how can you trust the facts if the source is partisan?

Join the League of Women Voters today (jmeerharnick@gmail.com) and enjoy disagreement without judgement; replacing anger with statements of facts and feelings…a recipe for bipartisanship.

What a concept!
