Readers Write: Mayor Bral makes right call on Vigilant

The Island Now

EMTs and paramedics work in a variety of roles and are often the first on the scene of accidents or medical emergencies.

Both EMTs and paramedics have the knowledge and skills to transport patients and provide them with emergency care.

The biggest difference between them is the amount of education they receive and what they are allowed do for patients.

EMT’s are not allowed to provide treatments that require breaking the skin.

Paramedics can administer medications, start intravenous lines, provide advanced airway management for patients, and resuscitate and support patients with significant problems such as heart attacks and traumas.

Prior to the negotiations for renewal of the ambulance service, dedicated paramedic service provided by Vigilant Fire Company was from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

After discussion and negotiations with Vigilant Fire Co., they have willingly agreed to add another dedicated paramedic from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

This will now provide for a dedicated paramedic on call 24/7.

I could clearly see that this is due to the devotion of the Great Neck mayor and medical knowledge of Mayor Dr. Bral.

I would like to thank both Dr. Bral for signing the contract and the Vigilant Fire Company and all of its volunteers and staff for providing us with a premier emergency service in Great Neck from which we all benefit and appreciate.

I hope that the other villages will take the Village’s lead and soon follow and sign the contract.

As a healthcare provider that has been working in Emergency departments in the area for many years I can see the value it added to our emergency system and safety it provides for the residents here in the village of Great Neck.
