Readers Write: Papers stand up for press freedom

The Island Now

Dear Temple Sinai

Free speech is one of our most cherished freedoms. It is guaranteed by the first amendment to the constitution.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and has the right to express it.

This  is a great thing but it makes it very difficult.  We may not agree with something someone says or writes but we must always remember that everyone has just as much right to their opinion as you do.

The fact that someone expresses something you find abhorrent does not give you or anyone else the right to try to censoring it.

What they say may bother you but thank God we still live in a country that allows freedom of expression.

The most important thing newspapers  can do is publish opposing views.

It opens lines of communication which might just lead to greater understanding.  Your dislike of what was written does not give you the right to threaten the newspaper with financial sanctions.

What it does is make you as bigoted as the ones you object to.

We must always ensure that our newspapers remain free from the fear of censorship from anyone.

Good job Blank Slate.
