Readers Write: Port residents step up for vets

The Island Now

On behalf of all the members of Port Washington’s American Legion Post 508, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all of the residents who volunteered on Sunday to place flags on Veterans graves at Nassau Knolls Cemetery and for those who braved a some-what uncomfortable day on Monday to attend the Memorial Day parade.

Sunday’s Grave Flagging event was incredibly successful with over 600 graves of Veterans being decorated with an American Flag.

The event was made even more special by the number of people, young and old, who showed up and gave their time to help out.

Monday’s parade would not have been what it was without all who came out to clap, cheer, and show their patriotism and respect for the day.

Every word of thanks, every wave of a hand, every flag being waved and just peoples presence was acknowledged and appreciated by each and every Veteran marching or in attendance.

Memorial Day is a day designated to pay homage to our service men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our great country. They are true heroes and should never be forgotten.

The members of the American Legion are humbled and owe a debt of gratitude to all residents who helped make these two days meaningful and a success.

Keep those American Flags flying!
