Readers Write: Town responds to problems

The Island Now

I had a recent experience in dealing with the Town of North Hempstead which made me feel good that I live in the Town of North Hempstead, and not so bad about paying a high tax bill if given the service I obtained from Supervisor Judi Bosworth and our consumer advocate, Lauren Summa.

From a prior experience with her I knew that Lauren was very responsive to inquiries, and this most recent experience served to reaffirm my belief.

There exists a stretch of sidewalk near the Town of North Hempstead beach that had several safety issues, to the point that it was virtually impassable in several spots.

This forced pedestrians into the roadway of a very busy West Shore Road in Port Washington. \

The sidewalk is also severely buckled due to tree roots and this posed a serious tripping hazard. Vine and branches were overgrown and the fence on the east side is falling over.

I brought these issues to the attention of Supervisor Bosworth, not knowing which entity is responsible for what issue (i.e., the Town of North Hempstead , Nassau County, individual property owners, New York State or whoever).

Judy promptly assigned Ms. Summa to handle my inquiry.

Ms. Summa called me right away to let me know what the game plan was for each issue, and then proceeded to investigate who was responsible for what.

The issues that the Town of North Hempstead  could mitigate were taken care of in a matter of days, and I must also add that the Town of North Hempstead  personnel who did the work exceeded my expectations.

Two other issues that will take more time were strategized and will be followed up on in the next few weeks.

All the while I was kept updated by Ms. Summa in a very professional and truly caring manner.

Once again, this experience make me glad that we live in a town that is so responsive to our needs as residents.

I contrast this to a safety issue with Nassau County which, after a year of getting passed from department to department with little/ no communication, is still unresolved after over a year and probably will never be.

At least in our town we know that our tax dollars are being well spent in this regard.

We’re in good hands.
