Readers Write: School coverage fails to identify cost per student

The Island Now

“We don’t often reply to letters from readers in this (Opinion-page) space,” the still-anonymous editorial writer of the Great Neck News wrote this week. “But the words of reader Joan Swirsky cannot stand without response.”

Well, thank you. I guess I hit a nerve. Nice try.

On an unrelated matter, your writer Dan Glaun, who does an otherwise excellent job of covering the Great Neck School System – and its proposed budget of a whopping $209 million dollars – never tells us exactly how many students that mountain of money is earmarked to pay for.

I wonder why this crucial fact is never mentioned. Couldn’t be pressure from the teachers’ union or the real-estate board, could it?

If there are 5,000 students in our schools, that would make the cost per pupil a staggering $40,000-plus per year. Harvard, MIT, Princeton anyone?

And how many pricey private tutors are added to that cost?

Just asking.
