Readers Write: State law answers problem of driving while stupid

The Island Now

New York State drivers will face further penalties for texting or holding a cell phone while driving.

A driver who is pulled over for these offences will face not only a fine but will face five points on their license. I must applaud Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his concern for us drivers and pushing for these new regulations. This I hope will help eliminate the number of these actions by drivers who are driving under the influence of stupidity.

Accidents since 2005 cause by drivers who are distracted with the use of these devices have jumped to over 143 percent.

This year there have been 25,165 car accidents compared to 4,628 caused by DWI crashes.

A case in point, while I was driving a few months back from my job in Mineola to my home in Glen Oaks Village, a woman in a SUV with two kids in the car including a dog ran a stop sign while holding a cell phone and talking.

It was a good thing that I was alert and was able to avoid an accident.

It seems to me that this woman was more concern with her phone call than being alert to what was happening on the road.

I guess the people she was transporting in her car didn’t matter.
