From the desk of Mayor Paul Ehrbar: Sublime WP baseball; tragic auto death

The Island Now

I was able to attend the Mayors Trophy Championship Game at Kelleher Field, Monday evening.

The contest was played by the Williston Park Patriots Team and a team from Massapequa.  This game was as exciting as they come.

Williston Park led 2-1 going into the final inning. They put up three runs at the top of the inning and victory appeared to be theirs.

However in the bottom of the inning, Massapequa began to mount a threat. They quickly scored two runs and had two base runners.

Yet, with fine pitching and excellent field work the Patriots held on for a 5-3 victory.

This victory has been waiting a long time. My understanding  is that Williston Park won this trophy in 1984, 1994, 2002 and now in 2012.

It has been a long stretch between wins. Let’s go for a repeat in 2013.

Congratulations to the players, coaches, and families  and a thanks for bringing the Mayor’s Trophy back to Williston Park.

This week there were two tragic events that I feel a need to comment about.

The village will be flying the flag at half mast in honor of Lance Cpl Greg Buckley, Jr., of Oceanside who was killed in action in Afghanistan. The 21-year-old graduate of Oceanside High School had hoped to complete his tour, and then return to New York with hopes of becoming a police officer

Early Sunday Morning a young man from Albertson, Dean Lalima, 41, was found lying at the intersection of Broad Street and Syracuse Street. He had apparently been hit by a car which resulted in his death.

The driver of the vehicle left the scene without stopping to give aid to the victim. Homicide detectives are currently seeking out the unknown operator of the vehicle involved.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to both families for their tragic loss

While the  “hit and run” happened at unusual hour, I can’t stress enough for drivers to drive cautiously when driving.

While my grandchildren Darby (4) and Tatum (3) were visiting we were playing at the church on Campbell Ave. These two young ladies commented and yelled “stop” as a number of cars passed through stop signs barely slowing their vehicles.

Much to my surprise many of the offenders appeared to be Williston Park residents.

I’ve commented in the past about our residents asking for cooperation and am doing so once again.

Many of our residents or their family members are current or retired police officers fireman and members of various law enforcement agencies.

I ask that we all slow down and ask our family friends and neighbors to do the same. It is our family, friends and neighbors who are at risk by those who fail to observe traffic devices.

Stop where required and slow down while driving.
