Readers Write: Town park mismanaged

The Island Now

The North Hempstead Beach Park consists of three main parts: the deserted beach to the north which was taken over from Nassau County; the southern portion formerly known as Bar Beach; and the new Nature Trail running south along the shore of Hempstead Harbor.

The north end of the beach is essentially deserted with the beach eroded away. It has a huge parking lot which is empty except for parked school busses and an occasional festival or fair.

I recently read that the town had received an enormous grant of Sandy money to replace this empty and useless parking lot.

This is not a windfall, that Sandy money is our taxpayer dollars.

This section of the park also is tainted with an apparent racist agenda.

Formerly, it housed a soccer field which, on the weekend, was heavily used by Hispanic players and their families.

This field was replaced by an expensive baseball diamond which draws few users.

The Old Bar Beach is unexceptional when compared to the great parks and beaches  provided by the Towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay.

The Nature Trail is a delight it was well planned and built.

Unfortunately, few people know about and use it. Its use, as well as the entire park, is further hampered by the obscene seasonal daily parking fees charged by the town.
