Readers Write: Unnecessary GN Vigilant sirens an earsore

The Island Now

I previously wrote two letters expressing the great irritation [Great Neck] Vigilant’s unnecessary blaring sirens produce.

My ego is not big enough to assume that those letters had even a single thing to do with what was, over a nice stretch of time, a beautiful reduction in their use. However, this reduction was both noted and fully enjoyed.  I felt like I was living in a peaceful community where the taxpayers quality of life is truly appreciated.

Why an observable increase in the use of the sirens has started to take place recently is of genuine concern to me.

Nine blasts seemed to have gone down to only one but now they have increased to four.  Its all so unreasonable.

Like I wrote before, actual volunteers from other outfits admitted that they feel a deep sorrow to see the abandonment of the sirens, not because of a fear associated with a dangerous response time to an emergency, but because a piece of history is being dissolved.

Indeed, they admit that the sirens are not necessary at all.

With this fact stated, why then have the blaring sirens increased?

Especially obnoxious, they are ,during the warm weather months, when windows are opened and the fresh air should be enjoyed by those who reside here. I want to take back my peaceful community and my right to have my windows opened again.

This much I know I deserve and to this much I know I am entitled.
