Readers Write: Vets deserve same tax breaks as 1st responders

The Island Now

Several years ago when the real estate reassessment was done in Nassau County veterans found out that their tax exemptions were now worth less in Nassau County and in Mineola Village, as the upper tax exemption limits had not been adjusted.

When Ed Mangano was elected he adjusted the upper tax level limit and restored the original tax exemption amount to our veterans.

I brought this before the Mineola Village when Jack Martins was mayor and he informed that the Village followed New York State guidelines so nothing could be done. I also asked one of our present trustees last year if this could be looked into but so far nothing has been done.

Mr. Cataldo stood up at the meeting and stated that he did not mind the reduction as he was willing to make the sacrifice. That was all very well if you are financially able, but what about the other veterans (who Mr. Cataldo appears to represent) who may not be as financially well as Mr. Cataldo?

Several weeks ago the Mineola Board of Education tabled a discussion on whether to give veterans a break on the crippling school taxes(many of which doubled after the reassessment).

I am all in favor of giving first responders a tax break but how about giving the veterans the same consideration?
