Readers Write: Yes to letters, no to weekly soapbox

The Island Now

Only the caption of the letter, (not the letter itself) from Eric Spinner in your April 15 edition “Turn the page if you don’t like what you’re reading” in response to the letter of the previous week from Alan Gray is right on the mark.

As soon as I see the weekly multi page or multi column entries from your dedicated group of pro bono columnists I don’t even start reading their columns but search the page for letters from others who would like to express their views in a limited number of words, so I don’t turn the page until I’m ready to do so.

Letters to the editor should not be a weekly soapbox for any individual especially since you give them unlimited space.

Maybe you should hire some of these letter writers to join Karen Rubin on your staff as paid columnists.

In that event, I might even start reading their input and not turn the page!
