Readers Write: Zimmerman verdict unjust, shows need for gun control

The Island Now

The Zimmerman verdict is heartbreaking.

The Martin boy did not start the problem. That innocent child, walking along toward his father’s home, was accosted by a bigot. A would-be policeman, obsessed with his mission to assert authority, play-acting the enforcer, had been told not to leave his car. But his distorted priorities prevailed.

I hope a civil trial is begun to prove that Zimmerman violated the victim’s right to walk the streets like anyone else.

Did that frightened boy, sensing that he was in danger, fight for his life?

Another example of the insanity of allowing almost everyone to carry a weapon. And the murderer satisfied his need to be a big shot. (No pun intended).

I would hope that all mothers would empathize with Trayvon’s parents.
