14 Schreiber athletes compete in states, nationals

Fourteen Paul D. Schreiber High School athletes competed in this year’s New York State and national indoor track, swimming and gymnastics championships.

Stanley Elysee, a senior, finished second in the boy’s high jump with a 6-foot-5-inch effort, six inches off of the leader at the state championship on March 4.

Maria Kogan took 12th place in the girl’s 1,000-meter run with a pace of 2 minutes and 58 seconds in the finals, and Lucy Hart, a junior, finished 20th in the 1,500-meter race.

“On behalf of the district I commend these fine student-athletes for demonstrating excellence in the arena and making us all proud,” Kathleen Mooney, the superintendent of schools in Port Washington, said. “It’s not only a testament to their hard work and prowess in their respective sports, but it also speaks to the efforts of their coaches and the support of their parents and the school community.”

Senior Aaron Siff-Scherr finished 23rd in the boy’s 1,000-meter race with a  time of 2 minutes and 39 seconds.

Elysee also teamed with classmates Joseph Levine and Rory Owens in the 4 x 800-meter relay at nationals. The team finished 22nd.

The sprint medley relay team of Eli Cruise, Jordan Hurt, Kitman Lam and Ryan Stevens competed at nationals as well, finishing in 17th place.

Ava Gellis and Beatriz Chavarria also competed in the state championships in track.

Gymnast Alex Gao, a senior, placed 13th in the state championships held at Cold Spring Harbor High School, with a 9.0 vault.

He was also a member of the Nassau County Section 8 team that placed fifth overall.

Derek Knight, a junior, competed in the state swimming and diving championships at Eisenhower Park on March 6 and competed in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events.

According to a news release, Knight holds the school record for time in the 200-yard individual medley.
