The Sewanhaka Lady Indians defeated the Great Neck North Lady Blazers 61-32 on Friday evening, led by Destiny Hurt’s 17-point game. Flo Hunte added 15 points while Ashley Cattle tacked on 11 for Sewanhaka.

Ashley Epstein led Great Neck North with eight points while three other players combined for 15.

Sewanhaka head coach Alex Soupios said the girl’s unselfish play and ability to switch things up on defense were on display against Great Neck North as they prepare for postseason play.

“I thought they moved the ball with precision,” Soupios said. “We tried a couple of different defenses and they were effective in the 1-3-1 formation. With all the different things that we can show on defense, especially in the playoffs, can be tough on some teams because we always have something else to fall back on.”

Great Neck North head coach Erik Connolly said a slow start hurt their chances of keeping up with a strong Sewanhaka team.

“Sewanhaka is always a top tier team,” Connolly said. “I honestly believe my girls ran out of gas. I just think we didn’t come out sharp enough.”

In the first quarter, Sewanhaka jumped out to a commanding 23-4 lead.

Hunte registered 10 points in the opening quarter for Sewanhaka, with two shots from three point range and two from inside.
