Readers Write: Roadways are for vehicles

The Island Now

I have just received a call from a very upset friend who had a very close call Friday night.
There is no issue for a large population of temple-goers to insist on walking to and from schul in the middle of our village streets.
The person is so upset from the near miss that they are still shaking two days later.
I see time and time again men and women in dark clothes, parents with babies in strollers, with small children tagging along, walking in the streets without a care to the safety of themselves or the little ones.
I don’t care about your arrogant, selfish attitude of endangering people’s lives; the roads are for automobiles not people or should we put the cars on the sidewalks where you should be.
If you get hurt that’s your fault but what about the poor driver who couldn’t see you in black in the dark?
He or she will go through hell especially if they kill a child, your child.
You seem to think Hashem is watching over you and nothing will happen. He is too busy watching over the rest of the world than to have to watch out for Great Neck fools.
You might do it Iran, Israel, or whatever country you are from, but we don’t do it here (with the exception of Boro Park).
I urge our [Village of Great Neck] Mayor Pedram Bral to write the heads of each temple in our village insisting that at services announcements are made to educate the congregation on the dangers.
I personally have witnessed two accidents, one a man was injured for life, one a woman was killed. I don’t want to see more.
As a footnote it would be nice if common courtesy could be applied when walking three or four abreast on sidewalks.
Step aside so that someone can pass by without being knocked into the bushes or off the curb.
Great Neck has some very bad drivers but in this instance they have my full support — get the walkers off the road.
