Residents of a Mineola street will soon get parking restrictions that they say are necessary to make their block safer.

The village board last Wednesday voted to bar parking on the west end of Linden Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day except Sundays and holidays, village Clerk Joseph Scalero said.

The restriction will take effect as soon as the village can install signs and send a letter informing residents of the new rule, Scalero said.

“We don’t want any surprises, basically, people walking out to their cars saying, ‘Why’d I get a ticket?’”

The move came two weeks after a group of Linden Road residents asked trustees to limit parking so employees of nearby businesses on Willis Avenue do not leave their cars on the residential street all day.

The east end of the street closer to Mineola Boulevard already has parking restrictions.

The rule will become permanent after six months unless the village board decides to change or eliminate it in that time.

The constant presence of cars along the curbs makes driving more dangerous and prevents the village from properly cleaning the streets, residents told trustees earlier this month.

Residents had asked for parking restrictions on Linden Road since November 2015. They presented a petition this month with signatures from every house on the block endorsing a ban on parking between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The village board expanded the time frame to accommodate the village street-sweeping schedule, Scalero said.

Linda Fairgrieve, a former trustee and Linden Road resident, said she was glad to hear about the rule. She has “almost been taken out” by oncoming traffic when turning onto the narrow street, she said.

“I hope they enforce it,” Fairgrieve said.
