A man stole a cash register with more than $500 and a charity jar with around $100 from the Williston Townhouse Diner early Friday morning, an employee said.

The diner’s security cameras caught a young black man throwing a tire iron at the glass of a side door at around 5:30 a.m., Tonla Hatzikostantinou, a waitress, said.

The man then grabbed the register and the jar of money collected for a children’s charity and ran out of the diner, Hatzikostantinou, who has worked at the diner for 6 years, said.

An employee was downstairs in the diner at 112 Hillside Ave, which closes at 2 a.m., but the man was gone when he came upstairs, Hatzikostantinou said.

Hatzikostantinou said the police responded shortly after and reviewed the security cameras and dusted for fingerprints.

She also said it is the first time anyone has broken into the diner.
