2 killed in L.I.E. crash used to live in Roslyn

The two latest victims from Sunday’s car crash on the Long Island Expressway that claimed six lives were former Roslyn residents.

Helen Adelson, 71, and Isidore Adelson, 81, both died from their injuries at area hospitals this week, after being transported from the scene of the three-car wreck near exit 68, Suffolk County police said.

They lived in Westhampton at the time of the crash, but previously resided in Roslyn Heights and were members of Temple Beth Shalom, an official from the synagogue said.

The crash occurred Sunday morning when Carmelo Pinales, 26, lost control of his Subaru Outback while driving east on the roadway and went airborne into westbound traffic after crossing the grassy median, police said.

His car collided with two vehicles on the westbound side of the expressway, including one in which Helen and Isidore Adelson were passengers, police said.

Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, including Carmelo Pinales, his sister Patricia Pinales, 27, and one of the drivers struck in the crash, Scott Martella, 29. Martella was communications director for Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone and a former aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Carmelo Pinales’ 10-year-old son, Christopher Pinales, was critically injured in the crash, and died of his injuries that morning after being transported to Stony Brook Hospital for treatment, police said.

Isidore Adelson, who often went by the nickname “Itchy,” was the fifth confirmed death from the crash, and on Monday Helen Adelson succumbed to her injuries. Marvin Tenzer, 73, and Sandra Tenzer, 69, were in the car with the Adelsons, and were transported to local hospitals for nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

Detectives are still investigating the incident and whether speeding was a factor, police said.

According to a Patch article, funeral services for the couple were held on Wednesday at the Hampton Synagogue in Westhampton, which they attended before their deaths.

The synagogue issued a statement  to Patch saying, “With profound sadness and overwhelming grief, our congregational family mourns the tragic passing of Helen and Itchy Adelson…May Helen and Itchy’s memory be a source of blessing and inspiration.”
