As initial construction on the Stepping Stones Lighthouse dock has begun, the need for funding the remaining projects on the structure is apparent. The Stepping Stones 5K, one of the more prominent fundraising events for the past two years, will be held in Kings Point on Sunday, Oct. 6.

“It’s great to see work being done on the dock,” said Bob Lincoln, a commissioner of the Great Neck Park District. “I think the runners and everyone at the event will be pleased to see the same.”

The run, which takes place at Steppingstone Park in Kings Point, saw 150 people take part last year. Fundraising and sponsorship efforts raised around $7,000, according to Lincoln’s estimates.  Participation for the event stretches beyond the Great Neck and Long Island communities, as past contestants have represented Brooklyn, Staten Island and Mt. Vernon.

“The race is really one of the best community-based social events,” said Lincoln.  “Having others come from around the area to engage and support that community is something to be proud of.”

Starting and finishing at Steppingstone Park, the race circles around Kings Point Park, adjacent to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.  Registration is $25 per runner, until Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. Participants can also sign up on the day of the event for $30 in cash.

“The atmosphere is festive and it is fun to mingle with the serious runners, the families who come to cheer, and the friends who ramble together without the competitive edge,” said Carol Frank, a member of the event committee.

Since its construction in 1875, the lighthouse has endured harsh weather conditions, leading to the need for work to be done on the entire structure. Frank and Lincoln said  they believe this lighthouse should be present for future generations in its best condition.

“It is a reminder to us of another era when technology was simpler and people relied solely on other people to keep them safe,” said Frank. “Our goal is to make that history come alive for all of us, especially our children. I think events such as this one are a step in the right direction.”
