When the children of the Floral Park-Bellerose School District arrived for their first day of school Sept. 4, teachers and administrators were met with a sea of smiling young faces.

Floral Park-Bellerose School students were excited to have school mascot Buzz the Bee welcome them for a new school year of learning. After being greeted by their teachers, who were clearly eager to get the new year underway, students headed to class and took part in a variety of fun and educational first-day activities. Each class spent time getting to know each other, learning about their new classroom routines and settling in for what will be an exciting school year.

At John Lewis Childs School, students enthusiastically greeted building leaders and teachers, while enjoying positive messages of encouragement on the school’s sidewalk. The day before school began, returning students and their parents chalked the school sidewalk with a variety of thoughtful words and phrases, such as “Be Kind,” “Good Luck” and “Smile,” to welcome new students to their beloved school. Once inside, students were directed to their classrooms, where they quickly began to acclimate to their new classmates and teachers.

Also enjoying the first day with students was new Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Sottile. Dr. Sottile was on hand alongside each school’s respective building leaders to welcome district students.
