Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Anna Kaplan of Great Neck announced on Facebook Tuesday her candidacy for New York’s District 7 Senate seat, currently held by Elaine Phillips (R-Flower Hill).

Kaplan, who was elected in 2011 in the town’s 4th District, said in a Facebook post she would formally announce her Democratic campaign at the Yes We Can Community Center in Westbury at 3:30 p.m. Friday alongside state Sen. Mike Gianaris, Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Nassau County Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs and North Hempstead Town Democratic Party Chairman John Ryan.

Port Washington resident Brad Schwartz has also filed to run as a Democrat in the Sept. 13 primary.

Kaplan was defeated in the 2016 primary race against U.S. Representative Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove).
