Art exhibit depicts shades of winter

The Island Now
A Mist Rising from Winter Laura Powers-Swiggett

Main Street Gallery will present a juried exhibition this season, “The Winter Solstice: Darkness Into Light,” with an opening reception taking place on Friday, Dec. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Juror Laura Powers-Swigget has lived and painted on Long Island for most of her life, where she has also widely exhibited. She works in a variety of media, including acrylic, oil and gouache.  Her abstractions are intuitive explorations of light, color and paint, and convey sensations about people, places and things that excite her (including the island she calls home).

About this exhibit, Powers-Swiggett says, “The winter solstice is a turning point, not just astrologically, but also in our psyches.  Artists since ancient times have mined its rich symbolic, metaphoric and spiritual imagery.  The visual possibilities are endless.  ‘Winter Solstice: Darkness Into Light’ is a theme that resonates greatly with my own work, and lends itself equally well to abstract and figurative interpretations.”

“The Winter Solstice” exhibit runs through Jan. 6, 2018. Main Street Gallery is located at 213 Main St. in Huntington. For more information, go to www.huntingtonarts.org.
