Balloon experiment teaches students about matter

The Island Now

Students in Ms. Murphy’s class at Munsey Park School in Manhasset participated in a hands-on activity to close out their matter unit. The first-grade students learned about the three states of matter and as a culminating experiment, they put their knowledge to the test by filling up a balloon.

First, students predicted what would happen if they combined a solid and liquid – in this case, baking soda and vinegar. While working with a partner, the students put baking soda into a balloon and placed it over a bottle of vinegar. The combination of the two items caused a chemical reaction that created a gas, inflating the balloon.

The lesson was a fun way to get students excited about science and apply what they learned in the classroom.
