Village of Kings Point trustees recently appointed village police Lt. George Banville to replace John “Jack” Miller, who retired from his role as the police department’s commissioner.
Miller, who retired in June, served as commissioner of the village’s Police Department for more than 13 years. He joined the department in 1978.
“I am honored to have been chosen to follow in the footsteps of my friend and colleague Jack Miller,” Banville said. “I look forward to providing many more years of dedicated service to the residents of the beautiful Village of Kings Point.”
He is a graduate of St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip.
Banville received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from St. John’s University.
He joined the Kings Point force in 1984 as a police officer.
During his early years with the police force, Banville covered shifts for the New York State Park Police during the summer months at Jones Beach.
He rose through the ranks of the Kings Point Police Department, moving on to serve as a sergeant and then as a lieutenant.
Banville’s entire law enforcement career has been spent with the Kings Point Police Department.
He said that police tactics have changed substantially since he began serving the Kings Point community.
“Today, we regularly receive training that is far more advanced and are provided with sophisticated state-of-the-art equipment for our personal safety and the protection of the communities we serve,” Banville said.
Police departments are now able to collect information and data, he said, that was not always available to law enforcement.
“Our ability to collect and access data, utilize high-tech computer and surveillance technology and communicate with and coordinate efforts with other law enforcement agencies is growing in leaps and bounds,” Banville said. “The information and resources available to the law enforcement industry becomes more complex with each passing year.”
Kings Point Mayor Michael Kalnick touted the work of both Banville and Miller during their more than 30-year tenure working together in the Police Department.
“Jack Miller and George Banville are dedicated law enforcement professionals who have worked alongside each other for more than 30 years, while being entrusted with the safety of the families living in our beloved community,” Kalnick said. “With Jack’s retirement, the board unanimously agreed that George was more than qualified to step in as commissioner.”
