Last month, the Baxter Estates Board of Trustees decided to create a separate planning board that would be “fairer [and] more independent,” according to Mayor Nora Haagenson. During Thursday’s meeting, Haagenson said the positions had been filled.
“I tried to get people who had a variety of experiences and skills,” Haagenson said. “They’re all very well qualified I really think this is terrific for us, I’m really pleased.”
The five-member board will consist of Chairman Jerry Hallissy and members Susan Athanasian, Andrea Falino, Brian Reardon and Peter Steincke. All are Baxter Estates residents, and they will all participate in a webinar before officially taking their positions.
“I was especially happy to get two women to serve,” Haagenson said. “Not that there is anything wrong with the men, but I like a mixed board.”
With winter soon to arrive in Port Washington, the trustees decided to extend their snow plowing contract with Robert Keogh Inc. for one year. The size of Baxter Estates has made it difficult to find alternatives.
“The problem is, we’re talking about a very small area,” Haagenson said. “They’re not going to do it.”
The office for the village, a renovated house on Main Street, has undergone several renovations recently that included fresh paint and a backup generator. But efforts are not complete, as the trustees authorized the acceptance of $50,000 to replace the Village Hall windows. That money comes from a state and municipal facilities grant.
“I would only urge that [the replacements] be a modern replica, not the BS where it’s a big sheet of glass with fake bullions inside,” said Deputy Mayor Charles Comer.
The trustees authorized the closing of Tianderah Road for the winter, from Dec. 4 through April 2, 2018. They also scheduled a public hearing for the 2018 Fire and EMS Protection contract on Dec. 7.
