Adelphi University is planning and involved in several events dealing with women’s rights and gender equality during March, Women’s History Month, on campus as well as in New York City and Tampa.
The events – which include discussions about the timely #MeToo movement, a keynote speech by university President Christine M. Riordan in New York City, and the launch of a book by two Adelphi alumna focusing on “women of resistance” – are:
Tuesday Talk: Unpacking the #MeToo Movement
Members of the Adelphi community are invited to discuss the #MeToo movement, which promotes the fight to end sexual violence and harassment. The talk will be Tuesday, March 6, from 1-2 p.m. at the University Center and is sponsored by the Center for Student Involvement (CSI).
American Management Association: Connect, Learn and Thrive with keynote speaker President Christine Riordan
Adelphi University’s first female president, Christine M. Riordan, Ph.D., will deliver a keynote speech at the first American Management Association (AMA) Connect, Learn & Thrive 1-Day Professional Women’s Event, on Wednesday, March 7, at the AMA New York City Conference Center.
Known for her expertise in leadership development, team building, and diversity and inclusion, Riordan will present Ready, Set, Change: Six Career Strategies to Help You Succeed in a Workplace That Has Just One Constant – Change Itself.

The Business of Biotechnology
Adelphi alumna Carmella Stephens, Ph.D., J.D., will deliver a lecture as part of the Business of Science/Horace McDonnell Lecture Series, a joint program of the Willumstad School of Business and the College of Arts and Sciences, on Thursday, March 8, from
2-3 p.m. at the University Center, room 213.
Stephens is a patent attorney who works at Carter, DeLuca, Farrell & Schmidt. She has counseled a wide range of clients including biotechnology and pharmaceutical corporations, as well as universities for more than 25 years. She has been listed as one of the Long Island Business News’ Who’s Who in Women in Professional Services.
Women of Resistance Book Launch in Tampa
The editors of Women of Resistance: Poems for a New Feminism, Danielle Barnhart, MFA ’15 and Iris Mahan, MFA ’14, will be holding a launch party at the Spain Restaurant and Toma Bar in Tampa, Florida, on Friday, March 9, from 5-7 p.m.
The event will include a poetry reading by Adelphi Professor Jacqueline Jones LaMon, as well as other writers including Mahogany L. Browne, Safia Elhillo, Dorothea Lasky, Cynthia Dewi Oka, Jenny Johnson.
