In the Art League of Long Island’s latest juried exhibition, Diversity in Our Lives, artists from the New York tri-state area were asked to submit their interpretations of diversity. The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing individual differences.

These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. The Art League of Long Island hopes, through this exhibition, to encourage understanding of each other and move beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.

Out of 205 entries, 66 works of art were selected for display in the exhibition by juror Thomas Germano, professor of art and art history at Farmingdale State College. The list of participating artists is posted online at www.artleagueli.org. The exhibit is on view in the Art League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery on May 25 through June 23. An artists’ reception will be held on Sunday, June 9, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Germano will host a juror talk on Saturday, June 22 at 11 a.m.

Established in 1955, the Art League is a not-for-profit visual arts center whose mission is to provide a forum and showcase for artists of all ages and ability levels, whether through art education in the studios or exhibition opportunities in the gallery and art fairs. Artwork on display in the gallery may be available for purchase.

The Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery is open free of charge on Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Art League is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills.
