Dr. Karen Siegel (Chapter founder), state Assemblyman Anthony D’Urso and Co-Presidents Victoria Pilotti and Ronald Francomano.

State Assemblyman Anthony D’Urso attended a dinner with the Zonta Club which was held on International United Nations Day, Oct. 24, at the Mediterranean Seafood & Grill where he was honored for his humanitarian work.

Over the past decade D’Urso has volunteered his time with several groups in Nicaragua, Kenya and in Haiti to build homes, schools, medical clinics and orphanages. He is now concentrating on improving the lives of Haitian children and put the other undertakings on hold.
D’Urso recently returned from one of his missions to Haiti where he started the planning process in order to build classrooms so that children who were orphaned because of the earthquake in 2010 and live in an orphanage which he helped to build will be able to attend school within the orphanage compound and not have to travel to schools that are far away.
The expansion will also include a new dormitory which will separate the boys and girls. Currently they all live in a two-story building.

His long-term plan will also include building a recreation room and a vegetable garden. Having a garden will enable the children to learn how to grow vegetables and they will save money by not having to purchase them from outside. In addition, they will construct a chicken coop where they will have chickens and fresh eggs.
During this visit, D’Urso put together plans for the future expansions and for the next trip where he will bring volunteers from the U.S. to help to construct the school, dormitory, garden and chicken coop.

This chapter of the Zonta Club is a local club of Zonta International which is a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.
