Castle Gould’s first art exhibit celebrates childhood wonder

The Island Now

The Sands Point Preserve Conservancy will present a magical exhibit of sumptuous, colorful illustrations by noted British artist George H. Lewis and quotes drawn from the forthcoming book, “The Boy and the Boy King,” co-created by Lewis and A.D. Lubow. The collection will be on view from March 1 through May 31, daily from 12 to 5 p.m., in Castle Gould’s newly refurbished Great Hall.

The exhibit, May We All Grow Up to be Children, consists of more than 25 works that touch upon the value of friendship, art, spirituality, nature, and childhood imagination, providing a delightful and meaningful experience for the entire family. The exhibit also features a series of thought-provoking questions about the nature of friendship and adventure, which, together with the dream-like illustrations, inspire discussion between adults and children.

According to Jane Curley, curator of the acclaimed New York Historical Society exhibitions, Eloise at the Museum and Madeline in New York: The Art of Ludwig Bemelmans, “Too often, our sense of wonder is dimmed — or doomed — before we reach adulthood. Arthur and Bun-Bun in ‘The Boy and the Boy King’ make a brilliant case for why we need to cultivate wonder in our lives, today more than ever.”

Sands Point Preserve Managing Director Beth Horn said, “The Conservancy continuously develops programming that enhances living, learning, wellness, and the arts in our community. May We All Grow Up to be Children — which encompasses all of these themes — is a fitting inaugural art exhibit for Castle Gould’s massive Great Hall. We hope that it will be the first of many.”

Previously the court painter to the Sultan of Oman, Lewis is an internationally acclaimed British artist. His diverse artistic practice includes paintings, portraits, photography, sculpture, writing, and music. His work has been collected by presidents, heads of state, CEOs, spiritual leaders, and other public figures worldwide. Lewis is a gross national happiness ambassador of the Kingdom of Bhutan and is currently artist in residence at Steinway & Sons.

Lubow is an advertising agency president and creative director, a children’s book writer, a composer of choral music and a lyricist of popular songs. His company, AD Lubow, is a communications agency with clients in the arts, higher education and environmental and social causes, including Columbia University, American Ballet Theatre, The Nature Conservancy and Pope Francis’s historic visit to New York.

The exhibit is free with admission to the preserve. For more information, call 516-304-5076 or visit www.sandspointpreserve.org. To view a video about the exhibition, go to www.sandspointpreserveconservancy.org/cultural-events/exhibitions.
