The Island Now
Silk Weavers at Sahalandy Village Cooperative

Alan Perlman, a working professional photographer for more than four decades, will speak about Madagascar and share his arresting images at the Port Washington Library on Wednesday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Sponsored by the Photography Club of Long Island, Perlman’s talk, “Malagasy Memories: A Journey to Madagascar,” will transport you to a mysterious land of distinctive culture, unique wildlife and spectacular beauty through his photographs.

Far off the east coast of Africa, the fourth largest island in the world, Madagascar evolved in complete physical isolation for millennia. This is the story of one brief but deeply affecting journey to a land of contradictions — home to a welcoming people, wildlife species found nowhere else on earth, unspoiled landscapes, as well as urban sprawl, poverty and human struggle.

Perlman has been a working professional photographer for more than four decades. Specializing in corporate communications, executive and business portraiture and special events of virtually every description, his work has appeared in numerous publications around the world. He has been teaching and speaking about digital photography in a variety of venues since 2006 and was named an Outstanding Teacher-of-the-Year by the Suffolk Association for Continuing Community Education in 2006. More recently, he has been traveling the world to learn and take photographs.

The Photography Club of Long Island, formerly known as the Port Washington Camera Club, was founded in 1975 and hosts free monthly programs at the Port Washington Public Library as a community service from September through June each year. For more information, visit www.pcliphoto.org.
