The East Williston School District announced that Wheatley 8th-grader, Grant Peterson, and Willets Road 6th-grader, William Sellerberg, are semifinalists in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee New York State Competition. The two geography experts will compete among the top 100 students at the state level contest in Albany on March 29.

To qualify for the state competition, earlier in the year, students participated in school GeoBees throughout the state to determine a school champion. The school GeoBees consisted of various geographic topics including U.S., world, and ocean geography, as well as material related to language, ecosystems, landmarks and historical events. After grueling rounds of questioning, a school champion was determined who then took the online qualifying test, which was submitted to the National Geographic Society.

Grant and William will have the chance to become a state champion as well as win various awards and medals and possibly become eligible for the National Competition in May.
