Garden City’s best kept secret

The Island Now

Did you know that in the heart of Garden City there are nine acres of land that have no houses, no stores and no apartments… only vacant land.

This rare and special place is the Garden City Bird Sanctuary. Located at just south of the LIRR main line across from 181 Tanners Pond Road in Garden City, this unique space can make life better for you, your friends and fellow residents of Nassau County.

The mission of the Garden City Bird Sanctuary is to manage a full functioning nature refuge for birds through the use of native plants and trees. In addition, they encourage educational endeavors and promote community service programs.

The Sanctuary was certified as an official Backyard Wildlife Habitat site by the National Wildlife Federation, based on being able to provide the four basic habitat elements needed for wildlife to thrive: food, water, cover and places to raise baby birds.

For more than 20 years, the Garden City Bird Sanctuary has been active in an effort to improve the environment and educate local residents on the meaning of environmental stewardship in our community.

The Sanctuary has also received numerous environmental awards and grants including one for Outstanding Ecological Program.

You and your family can visit any weekend during the warmer weather at no charge. Opening day this year is April 27 when their annual yard sale event will take place

The sanctuary is a great place to walk and enjoy nature without the commute, helping to balance the hectic lives we lead here in Nassau County by reducing stress and getting some exercise.

The Sanctuary receives no government funding from the village of Garden City, Nassau County or the state of New Yprk. They are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization totally run by volunteers and admission is free.

So pay a visit to this special place in your neighborhood.
