The LI Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives is holding an annual commemoration on the 74th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki this Tuesday in Bellport and Manhasset.
Long Islanders will once again gather together to remember and mourn the loss of so many lives in the bombings and the continuing consequences of that decision in 1945. We will call for nuclear disarmament and urge the United States to sign the U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. We will commit ourselves to action to prevent a new nuclear arms race and to face the global climate crisis.
In Bellport: At 6:30 p.m. gather on the sidewalk adjacent to Woodland Cemetery, Station Road and the head of Neck Road to join the silent procession to Bellport Bay for the program featuring Paul Ames, nuclear weapons actions and budget update. For info contact: M. Santantonio, 1-631-523-4663.
In Manhasset, join LI Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives and the Social Justice Committee of Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock’s commemoration at 7:30 p.m. at 48 Shelter Rock Rd. “We are running out of time as we face catastrophe with the dual threats of nuclear weapons use and the global climate crisis,” says LI Alliance Director, Margaret Melkonian. “The time is now to make peace with people and to make peace with the planet. The fate of the Earth and humanity hangs in the balance and depends on our taking bold and immediate action. The time is now to ban nuclear weapons and to ban fossil fuels.”
