Rabbi Andrew Hahn, proclaimed the “Maestro of Kirtan” by Rabbi David Ingber of New York City’s Romemu Center, presents a concert on Saturday, March 24 at Congregation Tifereth Israel in Glen Cove.
The 7:30 p.m. concert by the Kirtan Rabbi is free; the public is invited share this joyous, participatory musical event.
Kirtan, singing based on call and response, is a form of chant developed in India to heighten participation and communal feeling.
Said the late Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, the founder of the Jewish Renewal movement, “Within seconds of beginning to chant in Hebrew, the room became charged with palpable, sacred energy.”
Jay Michaelson, author of Everything is God, stated: “This is not your bubbe’s Judaism but after a few minutes, she’ll be clapping and dancing along with the rest of us.” It is not necessary to know Hebrew or even to be Jewish to participate.
