All members of the community are invited to view Temple Emanuel’s virtual SCW Friday night service, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m., when Nick Akerman, former Assistant Watergate Prosecutor, will be the guest speaker. He will offer the talk, “Lessons From Nixon and Trump: Does our constitutional system of government work?”

The conventional wisdom after the Watergate scandal was that the system worked.

With Trump, it appears to have failed miserably. Trump escaped impeachment for serious misuse of presidential power and went on to bungle the federal government’s response to a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. Nick will talk about how the system worked in both instances, albeit imperfectly, and where we go from here.

Nick Akerman, a nationally renowned lawyer, served as assistant special Watergate prosecutor with the Watergate Special Prosecution Force under Archibald Cox and Leon Jaworski.

He is an expert on the criminal and civil applications of the Racketeer and Corrupt Organizations Statute, the Economic Espionage Act, the federal Securities Laws, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and State Trade Secret and Restrictive Covenant Laws.

He also is an expert on computer crime and the protection of competitively sensitive information and computer data. Nick appears regularly on MSNBC, speaks and writes on protecting computer data, and has been a featured quoted expert on national issues in such publications as the Washington Post, Newsweek, The Hill, Politico, US News & World Report and The New York Times.

The talk is preceded by a brief service conducted by Rabbi Robert S. Widom and cantorial soloist Ron Morton.

Funding for the “virtual” SCW Friday at Emanuel was generously provided by Samantha and Michael Dorfman.
