Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation has opened a new eighth floor, six-bed Palliative Care Unit, dedicated to providing relief from the symptoms and stress of debilitating and serious illnesses.

Parker’s program expands their existing palliative services and delivers unit-based, coordinated care to patients with advanced pain treatments and expert management of disease symptoms, with the goal of improving their quality of life. The new unit was made possible by a grant from the UJA-Federation of New York.

“Parker’s team of medical professionals provides personalized palliative care for patients, when they suffer with pain, stress or other symptoms from a serious illness. Palliative care can be provided at any stage of an illness, and alongside treatments designed to cure a patient,” said Michael N. Rosenblut, president and CEO of Parker Jewish Institute. “It’s about providing compassionate care for a serious illness, including end of life care, and even the grieving process for one’s family members.”

Highly trained in palliative medicine, Parker’s team includes: skilled palliative care nurses; physician services; physical, occupational and speech therapy; pastoral care; home health aides; short term inpatient/respite care; medical equipment and medications; social work services; bereavement counseling; hospice trained volunteers; and 24-hour on-call services.

“Parker’s Palliative Care Unit was created with a goal of providing comfort and compassion to patients, a commitment to help patients and families deal with the challenge of a serious illness, and to live each day to the fullest,” said Aida Cabrera-Moro, RN, Palliative Care Nursing Director.

Some of the serious illnesses treated by Parker’s Palliative Care Unit include: cancer; heart, lung and kidney disease; Alzheimer’s; HIV/AIDS; ALS; multiple sclerosis; Parkinson’s and more.

If a patient’s illness does not improve, Parker respects their wishes and honors their dignity in making end of life decisions. Most importantly, such patients have access to Parker’s onsite Hospice Program. According to the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of New York State, Parker has one of the state’s premier hospice services.

Medicare, Medicaid and many private insurance plans are accepted. Advisors are available to answer your questions about insurance. Call 516-586-1575 or 718-289-2800 to learn more about Palliative and Hospice Care at Parker Jewish Institute.
