Percussion on the Sound makes its debut in June

The Island Now

Percussion artist Pablo Rieppi has performed with some of the world’s finest ensembles, and taught in New York City and around the world for the last 30 years. In that time, he also created and directed music education projects.

In 2009, he moved to Long Island. The longer he lived here, the more he recognized the many wonderful percussion students, but very few opportunities for young percussionists to perform as soloists and chamber musicians — something that young pianists and violinists do on a regular basis.

So he decided to create that opportunity. On June 8, he is presenting a concert of solo and chamber music performed by young percussion students. This will be the debut of Percussion on the Sound, POTS for short. The concert will take place at Hofstra University, who graciously donated the concert venue.

The program will include percussion works for Afro-Cuban ensemble, Brazilian-samba ensemble, seminal percussion ensemble works by composers such as John Cage and Toshitmitsu Tanaka, and appearances by special guests including Jonathan Haas, Clint De Ganon and the East Wind Percussion Ensemble.

The 21st century is the pinnacle for percussionists, who have moved from the back of the orchestra to the forefront of modern music. On June 8, members of the community can support these young and talented musicians.
