PORT TEMPLE HELPS TO RESETTLE SYRIAN REFUGEES

The Island Now

The social action committee of Temple Beth Israel of Port Washington announced it is partnering with a community agency in Canada — Levant Canada — to help resettle a Syrian refugee family in Canada.

The international partnership agreement with the Canadian humanitarian relief organization, Levant, directs 100 percent of local funds towards resettling Syrian refugees in Canadian communities. The agency was previously known as NadjaNow Canada.

The Temple Beth Israel Social Action Committee launched a fund-raiser to raise the money needed to resettle a family in Canada. For more information or to make a donation visit https://tbiport.org/community/social-justice

“We started this campaign so that people of conscience can do more than feel badly about the civil war in Syria¸” said Rabbi Mishkin of Temple Beth Israel in Port Washington. “This project gives people the opportunity to act, to save lives and to make a difference!”

Funds raised by the committee will also be matched by Adam Haber, a local entrepreneur, dedicated community member, and deputy chief of staff of economic development and government efficiency for the Town of Hempstead. This will be the fourth Syrian family whom Adam and Renée Haber have worked to sponsor.

The Syrian refugee crisis is one of the most devastating ongoing calamities in the world, as an estimated 5.6 million Syrians – more than half of them children –have fled extreme violence in the past eight years.
