PSEG Long Island’s Brittany Venturo of Smithtown assembles smoke alarms in a New Hyde Park home—doing her part to keep local families safe by participating in the American Red Cross “Sound the Alarm” campaign.

Smithtown resident Brittany Venturo recently joined a group of fellow employees from PSEG Long Island to volunteer for the American Red Cross’s Sound the Alarm campaign.

The volunteers assisted the Red Cross in its quest to make all homes fire safe. Venturo helped out by unpacking the alarms and preparing them for installation. She also offered fire safety tips to the homeowners and provided them with energy efficient LED lightbulbs to replace some existing bulbs in an effort to help the homeowner save money and electricity.

“PSEG Long Island is committed to safety and giving back to the communities it serves,” says John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island vice president, transmission and distribution operations and American Red Cross board member. “At least once a month, our employee volunteers canvass communities with the American Red Cross to educate customers about emergency preparedness and energy efficiency while they support Red Cross staff representatives as they install life-saving smoke detectors.”

“We are grateful to our teams of volunteers, like those from PSEG Long Island, with whom the American Red Cross has installed free smoke detectors across Long Island and all over the country. National volunteer efforts have resulted in the installation of more than 1.6 million smoke alarms since 2014,” said Neela Lockel, CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island. “These efforts have saved 511 lives and educated more than 1.7 million people to protect themselves and their families against home fires.”

According to the American Red Cross, every day across the country, seven people die in home fires. Often the victims are children and the elderly, most in homes that lack working smoke alarms.
