The Island Now

We all know that taxes are a big reason for Long Island’s high cost of living. We need to support leaders in government who are working to lower taxes and make Long Island more affordable.

Our senator, Elaine Phillips, has been a leader in that effort. As a village mayor, she never raised property taxes, and still found ways to provide new parks, programs that protect groundwater and better services.

In the Senate, she’s continued to be a tax fighter, sponsoring legislation to restore senior property tax exemptions, doubling middle-class STAR rebates, blocking a backdoor plan by Nassau County leaders to raise assessments and voting twice to make the taxpayer-friendly property tax cap permanent.

The tax cap works and has saved Nassau County taxpayers more than a billion dollars, stopping the runaway tax increases that make it harder for families to stay here, and for our children to build their own lives and careers on Long Island. We must think about our children’s future here on Long Island.

Who will be there to stop this consistent increase of our taxes? The last party imposed new taxes like the MTA payroll tax and even suggested eliminating STAR rebates for homeowners.

Only one candidate in the race for State Senate has voted to raise taxes—and even voted in 2013 to break the property tax cap by three times the limit. It wasn’t Elaine Phillips.

As a taxpayer, I think it’s clear who will continue to fight for a permanent tax cap that will make it more affordable to live on Long Island. That’s why I will be voting for Elaine Phillips and I urge all my friends and neighbors to do the same.
