Readers Write: Turnout for EWSD budget vote a sad commentary

The Island Now

What a disgrace that less than 400 people showed up to vote for the EWSD budget.

Are we really resigned to the fact that our voice is irrelevant?

We all know that many costs are mandated.

However, just maybe if every community on Long Island voted down the budgets the politicians would be forced to consider a new way to fund education. This method is unsustainable.

Why are people forced to sell their homes because they pay ridiculous amounts of money to live on a postage stamp?

Salaries are a huge proportion of the budget. They do not need to be increased further. Our teachers are incredibly well compensated.

People need to speak up. The local leaders do not deserve all of the blame.

Four hundred voters is embarrassing. We need to send a message to Nassau and Albany that the status quo is not acceptable.
