Readers Write: Vote For De Giorgio on Nov. 5

The Island Now

On Nov. 5 re-elect Dina DeGiorgio as our town councilwoman. Over the years we have followed the issues affecting our community and firmly believe that Dina is the most knowledgeable and effective councilperson on the town board.

She is smart, tenacious when needed, and an independent thinker who is willing to cross “party” lines when in the best interest of her constituents. Since her election in 2011, she has done an excellent job fighting for our community and we are certain she will continue to do so when re-elected.

During her tenure as councilwoman Dina has been a staunch advocate for our quality of life. Among her many accomplishments is the re-building of the pedestrian overpass at the train station (the MTA had no intention of replacing the previous structure), the collaboration with Residents Forward and Nassau County to create the commuter shuttle, the launching of the innovative rideshare app for town residents, the blocking of National Grid from tearing up newly-paved roads and requiring them to pay their fair share of repaving costs when necessary.

Dina led the fight to save and improve the property that now houses the Alvan Petrus Park, created 5 miles of new biking and walking trails, protected our waterfront from over-development through the passing of building and zoning revisions, and secured funding for the refreshing of streets and sidewalks on Upper Main Street.

In September of 2016, motivated by her deep concern for the children of our community, Dina proposed legislation that raised issues about vaping and smoking in order to limit sales of these products to our children, three years in advance of the national outcry we see today.

While Dina lead the charge to pass a policy that would have protected the health of our children the rest of the Town board voted to shelve the proposal. Now, three years later our entire nation is focused on the concerns over the health consequences of vaping.

Dina continued demonstrating her concern for our children by spearheading the passage of Tobacco 21 legislation and by the banning of hookah lounges near schools.

Councilwoman Dina DeGiorgio consistently pushes for fiscally responsible spending and lobbied to hold the town budget vote before Election Day, not after.

Dina developed a new debt management plan that was adopted by the Town and she is currently fighting to keep our taxes flat which would mean more money in our own pockets.

At the same time, Dina continues to lead the effort to secure grants and other funding sources to finance projects such as the revitalization of Main Street, resulting in a savings to us the taxpayers.

In the next few years, there are a number of important issues facing Port Washington that will potentially change the landscape of our community forever. The residents of Port Washington need and deserve a town council representative with a proven track record, a person who is a smart independent thinker, proactive in identifying formative issues, and a person who is willing to act in the best interest of our community.

With this in mind, we encourage you to take the time to thoroughly research each candidate and their respective platforms. Once you do, we are confident that you will cast a vote in support of Dina and hope that you will encourage others to do the same.
