Renowned interventional neuroradiologist, Dr. Athos Patsalides, has joined the department of neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital.
Known for his clinical expertise in the endovascular treatment of complex diseases of the brain and spine, Patsalides has been appointed as the hospital’s chief of neuro-interventional surgery and director of the neuro-interventional surgery fellowship program.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Patsalides to our neuroendovascular and interventional neuroradiology team,” said Dr. Raj K. Narayan, chair of the department of neurosurgery at NSUH and Long Island Jewish Medical Center and executive director of Northwell Health’s Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery. “Dr. Patsalides will serve as an asset to our department in the endovascular treatment of diseases of the brain and spine, including stroke, brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and carotid and intracranial stenosis. He has also pioneered novel treatments for pulsatile tinnitus and idiopathic intracranial hypertension.”
Patsalides most recently served as an associate attending in the department of neurological surgery and associate professor of radiology and neurological surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Earning his medical degree from the University of Athens, Greece, Patsalides went on to earn a Master of Public Health degree at Johns Hopkins University in Bethesda, Md.
His post-doctoral training included two radiology residencies at the Hellenic Red Cross Hospital in Greece and at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. In addition, Patsalides also completed a fellowship in diagnostic neuroradiology at Georgetown and a second fellowship in interventional neuroradiology at Weill Cornell.
“The addition of Dr. Patsalides will further enhance our cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery program as a pioneering leader on Long Island, the New York metro region and the country, in the treatment of complex diseases of the brain and spine,” said Dr. Henry Woo, NSUH’s vice chair of neurosurgery and director of cerebrovascular surgery.
Patsalides is a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology and a senior member of the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery and the American Society of Neuroradiology. He is also a member of national committees of the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery and the American College of Radiology.
Patsalides has been repeatedly featured in Castle Connolly’s “Top Doctors” for the New York Metro Area. He has received multiple awards and distinctions from the Radiological Society of North America, the American Society of Neuroradiology, and the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery.
Patsalides is the principal investigator of new clinical trials testing venous sinus stenting for pulsatile tinnitus and for idiopathic intracranial hypertension.
He has published extensively on the treatment of brain aneurysms, stroke and vascular malformations of the brain and spine and has been an invited guest speaker at multiple national and international meetings and courses.
