Internationally acclaimed painter and sculptor, Edwina Sandys, has granted permission for her artwork to be featured on the cover of the Gold Coast Arts Center’s Fall 2019 Catalog. “Women, Fish, Tulips” is a vibrantly colored serigraph. “I like to take an image and reverse it,” says Ms. Sandys of the artwork. “Women, Fish, Tulips, and brilliant colors are a few of my favorite things.”
“We are thrilled to have such a highly accomplished artist, past honoree of the Gold Coast Arts Center and dear personal friend of mine, grace the cover of our new catalog,” said Regina Gil, founder and executive director of the Great Neck, NY -based not-for-profit, multi-arts center. “We offer art and cultural programs for people of all ages and abilities, and Edwina’s work is fun, elegant, and inspiring; it is quite possible that the next Edwina Sandys could emerge from the diverse body of art students at the Arts Center.”
During the last four decades, Edwina Sandys has created art of international recognition. For the 1979 United Nations’ Year of the Child, she crafted three monumental sculptures installed at UN centers in New York, Geneva, and Vienna. Ten years later, she used sections of the Berlin Wall to create an extraordinary sculpture, Breakthrough, permanently housed at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, where her grandfather Sir Winston Churchill delivered his historic “Iron Curtain” speech in 1946. Later, Edwina created BreakFree, also using part of the Berlin Wall, for the Freedom Court at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library at Hyde Park, New York.
Edwina’s artistic appeal lies in her diverse subject matter. Tapping into her unique life experience, Edwina relates her work to the global issues of our time. From the sacred to the secular, from politics to society, she has tackled big ideas with panache, blending the lighthearted and the profound.
