The Island Now

Sid Jacobson JCC invites community members of all ages to walk or run either virtually or in-person* at its 2020 Stronger Than Cancer 5K taking place Sunday, Oct. 18. Virtual registrants can participate on their own 5K route while in-person registrants will walk or run the JCC’s USATF certified course in East Hills. Participants can register now for the 5K at sjjcc.org/5k.

“This is the biggest event of the year for the Nancy Marx Cancer Wellness Center,” explains Randy Hight, director of Nancy Marx Cancer Wellness Center, Sid Jacobson JCC. “While this year’s event will look different than years past, what won’t change is the support of our community, which can be felt virtually and in-person. We invite people young and old, families, and friends to take part in the 5K and become aware of the cancer survivorship services we provide.”

Last year’s Stronger Than Cancer 5K was attended by more than 400 participants and surpassed its goal of raising $125,000. The annual event benefits SJJCC’s Nancy Marx Cancer Wellness Center which provides much-needed programming, including exercise classes, discussion groups, counseling services, and more. Programs are open to those living with cancer throughout all stages of treatment and survivorship while helping participants feel active, resilient, and empowered in body, mind, and spirit. Thanks to funding from the Stronger Than Cancer 5K and other events, 98% of these vital services are offered free of charge to participants.

SJJCC board member and 5K event chair Harvey Marx, whose wife Nancy passed in November 2013, saw the need to support a cancer wellness center after his late wife sought emotional support services after her last round of chemotherapy and radiation. “A lot of well-deserved money is raised towards cancer research but programs such as the ones offered at NMCWC are just as crucial. Our programs help those with cancer find ‘solid ground’ again. These programs are open to all who want and need assistance and we will never turn anyone away for financial reasons,” says Marx.

For those participating in-person*, the race will begin on the grounds of Sid Jacobson JCC and travel through Country Estates. The $20 entry fee includes event swag and race awards.
