Silver Award Project: Helping First Responders

The Island Now

Several girls from the Herricks Association of Girl Scouts Troop 1106, with the support of the Village of Williston Park, will be working to improve the safety of our neighborhood by helping first responders identify homes faster when there is an emergency at our homes or on our streets.

The group (Melina Helgeson, Angelina Lasorsa, Katherine Murphy, and Celine Yong) from Troop 1106 have begun their Silver Award project to paint street numbers for all homes from Foch Boulevard to Park Avenue, between Center Street and Lafayette Street, nine blocks in total. This will allow first responders to locate homes faster.

With permission from the Village of Williston Park, the girls will be painting street numbers in white paint on a black background, which the fire department has said will reflect better late at night. The Village is very supportive of the project and Mayor Ehrbar recommended first delivering letters and knocking on doors, on more than one occasion, to ensure that as many residents as possible are informed before the girls start this important project.

The girls are following Mayor Ehrbar’s suggestion and began knocking on doors on Saturday, March 16th, leaving information on their project. Over the next few weeks, the girls will continue to drop off and collect the forms. Once completed, they will move on to the next phase of painting the curbs. Homeowners who provide their email addresses on the forms will be notified in advance as to when the girls will be painting on their street. The girls are hoping to start painting in late Spring, and continue into the Fall. This is a project that the Girl Scouts and the Village of Williston Park hope will be sustained for years to come.

So if you see them knocking on your door, don’t assume they are there to sell you cookies! They are working on an important mission of helping to keep you safe in case of an emergency in the future.

We hope you will support them. If anyone has any questions, please email the girls at mackthegirlscouts@gmail.com
