A weekend of song will take place at Adelphi’s Performing Arts Center for its fourth year with the SingStrong A Cappella Festival running from Feb. 8 through Feb. 10.
Fans of the movie “Pitch Perfect” and the TV show “The Sing-Off” are in for a treat as talented singers participate in a cappella concerts. Visitors can see one or all five of the completely different performances showing off the best of the human voice singing a cappella pop, jazz, doo-wop, barbershop, and beatbox. The musical groups will include professionals, as well as high school and college students. In addition, there will be two days of classes for those with a more serious interest in this style of music. A silent auction to help fight Alzheimer’s will also be held.
Friday is the ACA-IDOL Competition where college and professional groups compete. ACA-Celebrities will judge live while the audience votes by cell phone. The matinee on Saturday features high school groups competing for awards as well as Single Singers New York, an open a cappella group that anyone can join. Also on Saturday, there will be two evening shows with different professional acts from around the world. The festival concludes on Sunday with a show featuring professional groups from around the world and a new segment called Shruit, in which South-Asian style a cappella is featured.
The times of the SingStrong A Cappella Festival are Friday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m., three shows on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 2, 7, and 9:30 p.m., and a Sunday, Feb. 10, show at 2 p.m. Classes are scheduled during the day on Saturday and Sunday. All shows will take place on the Westermann Stage at the Adelphi Performing Arts Center, 1 South Ave. in Garden City.
Tickets range from $20 to $35, depending on the concert, with discounts available for students for select shows. There are also all-inclusive weekend passes including classes starting at a discounted $75 for students, seniors, music educators, and groups of 10 or more.
