St. Francis Prep hosts charity event to help fight cancer

The Island Now

On Friday, April 5, the St. Francis Prep community will come together at 4 p.m. in the school’s gym for a fundraising event to help fight cancer. The afternoon will feature a dodgeball tournament with six teams, made up of well over 40 faculty and staff members. There will also be a number of raffles that include gift certificates, New York Yankees tickets, various baskets, and a sound bar.

The event is in memory of two Prep students, Brooke Pearson and Madeline Sershen. Madeline was struck by a car last summer, and Brooke was a victim of cancer. All proceeds will go to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Brooke’s name. The Pearson family will be in attendance. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door.

For the second year in a row, Prep alums Courtney Yepez and Danielle Petrone are the event organizers. They both work at Prep as well, Yepez in the Dean’s Office, and Petrone as the ENL teacher. Last year’s event was organized for a friend and classmate who had passed, and the event raised $10,000. They hope to both surpass that amount, as well as sell out.

In speaking with them, they hope that this event will bring the community together, in a fun way, for a good cause. After last year’s event, which pulled at personal heartstrings for them, they wanted to continue organizing it and find different and important charities that the Prep community could help.

St. Francis Prep is located at 6100 Francis Lewis Blvd. in Fresh Meadows. Street parking is available.
