St. Francis Prep mounts annual spring concerts

The Island Now

On two subsequent Fridays, May 3 and May 10, the music department of St. Francis Preparatory School will present their annual spring concerts, showcasing the culmination of a year that brought national recognition to an already well established program.

In all, well over 550 Prep students will be performing over the two nights. May 3 will include all three orchestras, both percussion ensembles, and the concert chorus. May 10 will spotlight all three bands, and Prep chorus and chamber orchestra. The concert on the 10th will also feature the bands from Sacred Heart Catholic Academy in Cambria Heights, St. Luke School in Whitestone, and St. Gregory the Great Catholic Academy in Bellerose.

Each concert begins at 7:45 p.m., with doors opening at 7:15 p.m. General admission tickets are $5, and can be bought in advance in Prep’s music department office, or at the door. There is ample street parking.

The music department at St. Francis Prep has earned numerous national and international accolades in the last two years. In the spring of 2018, they were recognized by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools by earning, for the second time, their Program of Distinction in Music. They were the first school ever to earn this honor in the spring of 2011. In January, they were recognized by Music for All’s Advocacy in Action. Finally, and most recently, they were recognized by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation (NAMM) as being a SupportMusic Merit Award (SMMA) school.
